D.A. Pennebaker’s concert film Ziggy Stardust & the Spiders from Mars remains the defining document of the end of David Bowie’s first great stage persona. The set, recorded at Hammersmith Odeon on 3 July 1973, included songs from each of the Starman’s unbroken run of classic albums, from 1969’s David Bowie (aka Space Oddity) to the then current Aladdin Sane. It climaxed with Bowie’s surprise onstage announcement that it would be the final Spiders from Mars show and promptly entered rock legend.
